QCon SF 2008 - Day 1 19 Nov 2008

Coming into this conference I have some very high expectations due to the calibre of the speakers at the conference. That being said, it started off with a bang, the opening keynote featured Martin Fowler and Rebecca Parsons of ThoughtWorks on the topic of how an architect and the agile process are complementary and not adversaries as many many think.

Can Database Refactoring be Agile? 11 Nov 2008

I was fortunate enough to partially attend the Much Ado About Agile Conference held recently in Vancouver, and was immediately drawn to the session “Database Development in Agile World” led by Marc Munro. This was a very timely session as we have recently begun a project that involves refactoring a legacy database and developing a [...]

asking easy questions to find hard problems 07 Nov 2008

I had the pleasure of attending the third annual Much Ado About Agile conference hosted by Agile Vancouver. As a good example of our organizational agility, we divided up the conference sessions amongst ourselves and tag-teamed between attending sessions and working back at the office (or remotely). Ken Schwaber, one of the founding fathers of [...]

Old habits die hard 06 Nov 2008

I had the privilege of attending a "Certified ScrumMaster" course being taught by Ken Schwaber who is one of the co-founders of the Scrum process. I've been using the scrum process for a few years and felt fairly confident in my ability to "live" the principles of Scrum but all it took was one exercise to smack me back to reality.

A New Commuter is Born…. Just in Time Since Bike to Work Week is Fast Approaching (Nov 17th)! 05 Nov 2008

Judi moved from Toronto 3 years ago to work at 2Paths in Gastown.  In Toronto, getting to work consisted of taking the subway or battling the traffic to Bay Street and fighting for one of  the few, precious downtown parking spots.  For those reasons, Judi had given up on driving in Toronto, and sold her [...]

A special place in HELL is reserved for you if….. 21 Oct 2008

If you’re like me, you are usually reading the clever little sayings on the side of your Starbucks disposable cup through blurry eyes whilst trying to plan the busy day ahead of you.  There was one that stood out for me a year and a half ago, which I still remember to this day.  The [...]

Using Spring themes to override resource bundle messages 17 Oct 2008

We use Spring quite a bit. In one project we use Spring MVC (I won’t get into a rant about whether that’s a good thing or not) and rightly or wrongly we use Spring themes within our UI. Yes I know JSP based UIs are so last century but sometimes if the shoe fits … One [...]

Scrum 101 07 Oct 2008

I’m known as the ScrumMistress around the office, but as of the end of August I’ve actually officially earned the name. I attended a ScrumMaster course put on by the Software Productivity Center & Winnow Management and am now a certified ScrumMaster. Scrum is an iterative, incremental, Agile process for developing any product or managing any [...]

Barcamp 2008 - Granville Island, Vancouver 07 Oct 2008

barcamp.org/BarCampVancouver2008 My first Barcamp started the way most mornings do. Alarm goes off, roll out of bed and rub the eyes. Brew a pot of coffee and… you get the idea. This day saw me at the Granville Island market bright and early, 9.30am, okay so not so early, but it was a Saturday… Anyway, in [...]

What can you tell about an organization by what conferences they attend? 11 Sep 2008

Is this a trick question, or what?  Actually, I think it’s more like doing an analysis on the corporate ‘fingernail’ of 2Paths.  If I tell you about the conferences we attended this year, I think you will quickly get a good sense of what we’re into.  Here’s a few.  The No Fluff, Just Stuff conference [...]
